How the Church of Scientology collects confidential personal informations?
"I would like to raise your attention that in case you publish this
article you will expose yourself and your newspaper to attacks" - I
read this in the morning in my email. This is written by a stranger
tad who escaped from the country because of the Church of Scientology,
as he claims.
His name is András Árpád Baráth. He gives his cellular number, I call
him. I hear a scared voice in the phone. I learn that he currently
lives in a country where authorities took seriously that his life was
threatened. I say there is nothing to worry about me and my journal
where I publish my articles. After I am asserting at some length that
I have no connection to the Church of Scientology, he begins his
story.
Since 1993 he was working at Metall-Techno Ltd. as a constructional
engine fitter. His boss, Viktor Heincz one day announced that they
asked some consultants from WISE due to the payment problems of the
firm. In summer of 2004 the WISE consultant arrived. He was Gusztav
Radoczi, an infamous politician whose name was connected to
scientology many times before. Between 1998 and 2002 the yeoman-party
politician was the mayor of Gyömrő, Hungary.
I have absolutely no idea what WISE is, therefore I visit their
homepage on the net. Then I realizing that WISE (World Institute of
Scientology Enterprises) is a -not officially connected- part of the
Church of Scientology that practically sells organizational and
administrative principles of L. Ron Hubbard (writer of many sci-fis
and other works) for different firms for secular purposes. In exchange
firms are paying as they can, mostly with fix charges. As I see, WISE
is very-very flexible regardig the paying methods when it comes to
collect money.
Barath and the other employees worked under a salary system where one
who made an error got a "black spot". After that one reached some
amount of black spots his salary has been reduced. Barath remarks that
one got "red points" only in case of he/she reported the other
person's fails/errors. In case of a person had doubt regarding this
new method, or one raised his/her voice about it, they threatened
him/her or started to discredit him/her in the community.
They had the workers fill tests, after this the WISE consultant had
the conclusion it is the local manpower who liable (for the problems.)
Then they made daily"personality evaluating" tests and conversations
mandatory. Employees had the opportunity for further training,
however, the firm financed only courses of L. Ron Hubbard. Every
religion, everything that wasn't working under the rules of Dianetics
became a symbol of idiotism. Even those persons who wore a cross got
malicious remarks.
Barath saw Scientology certificates in the room of his boss even well
before this, so it came obvious that the upper management of the firm
-as well as the department of employment- was strictly connected to
the little church. His opinion is that the firm transferred huge sums
to the scientologists - he considers merely this is the cause of the
financial problems and insolvency. Barath wanted to raise the
attention of his collegeues, i.e. the Church of Scientology
infiltrated the firm but they barely listened to him.
The consultants did everything to expose some severe fault in Barath's
work so that they could fire him.
One of the consultants wanted him to do a test that represents serious
harm to the personality rights. On the margin of the test there were
data about Baráth -for example the address of his parents- that are
allowed to handle only by authorities.
I had two question about this: could be someone obligated to fill such
thing? What kinds of tests were these?
I call Bernadett Poczók from the employment department of the firm.
She answers my questions heartily, of course she tells nothing except
that the firm has nothing to do with the church of Scientology. I
learn that the workers filled the so-called "Oxford test" and that is
an usual employment procedure. But I am starting to be suspicious
because where I consequently pronounce E-meter incorrectly she
immediately corrects me. The E-meter is a small instrument similar to
the lie detectors that can be seen in some James Bond movies, used by
the church to assess different mental problems.
Based on the written proofs of Barath, I acqire a copy of the test
filled by him. As it turns out, this test is very similar to the
declaration of admission of the Church of Scientology, in which it is
fixed that the person who signs it throws up all of his rights to
initiate legal action in case of any dispute between him and the
Church of Scientology.
I find my "favourite" question very soon. The common denominator in
the questions is that they asking very precise and detailed data.
After the usual psychiatrist- and psychologist-hating questions there
are following some questions about the parents: is any of the parents
hostile to the Church of Scientology? Then here are coming other
questions I cannot understand the function of. It is also unclear for
what purpose could use the church these questions. For example: have
you ever sell drugs, who did you sell for, what quantity, how many
times, in what circumstances. That is not all: they are wonder about
have you ever been employed by the government, or by secret service.
They are wanting to know about your full sexual history, paricularly
regarding homosexual activities, about your detailed description of
your wealth, assets, estates, properties, the names and addresses of
your acquaintance, parents, ex-lovers, marriage and family problems,
current and ex workplaces of the parents, your full medical health
record and all of your commitments.
Barath tells he was supposed to fill the test in the office of the
WISE consultant while touching the E-meter "cans". Naturally, he was
not willing to do this, mainly because on the test page he saw his own
personal identity card number and all of his personal data. He yet
realised a time ago the firm wants to work only with the cooperative
ones, so he -after some threats committed by stranger persons,
threatening his parents, too- preferred to leave with "consensus",
knowing that all of his data has been transferred to the Church of
Scientology.
As he says, his colleagues copied and sent him a fax message. In this
message Monika Braun, leader of the Narconon directed the
scientologists of the Metall-Techno Ltd. to begin to watch Barath and
to collect every possible data about him. She wanted to collect each
such data that proves his incredibility and with which they can
silence him later. (The Narconon Foundation is an unofficial
foundation of the church and it has nothing to do with the
Metall-Techno Ltd.)
I call Monika Braun in the Narconon office, but she is not there. I
leave my mobile phone number, she calls me back 3 days later. I ask
her what is the connection between her and the Metal-Techno Kft.
Nothing, she says. After I mention that I have a fax in my hand in
which she orders some Metall-Techno employees to collect data about
some people, a long silence follows. I starting to believe the phone
line was broken when she tells me she contacted this firm in the name
of a Dianetic center (on Örs vezér square, Budapest) and she asked
only the "usual" questions regarding the workers.
I cannot restrain myself to call the central office of WISE to ask
where the filled tests arriving to. The fax message of Monika Braun
makes for me obvious that each leader of every scientology foundation,
association is allowed to access to these data.
The phone rings and Imre Toth, the leader of WISE answers it. We are
chitchatting jovially about the spirituality of WISE, that it is a
business method and artlessly the WISE clubs are syndicating the firms
of the scientology believers, too. When I ask about is it possible to
the WISE consultants to have others to fill tests with confidential
questions and whether do they send these tests back to WISE or the
Church of Scientology, the answer is a univocal no. Mr. Toth also
mentions that he can imagine that "some consultant used such
questionnaire from personal ambition, so it is completely under the
responsibility of that firm if it cannot see after the personal data."
While I am doing my private investigation there are many who
contacting me about some kind of confrontation with the Church of
Scientology. The horror-like stories always ending up with families
broken, firms went bankruptcy, people escaping from the country or
burning themselves with gasoline, etc. Authorities are inert in all
cases.
Barath planning to establish a foundation that wants to help such
people got trouble similar to him until the proper legal circumstances
developed. Namely, nowadays the law is always defends minor
churches. The state cannot intervene into any causes inside any church
(religion) if one signs an aforementioned statement in which one
throws up his/her rights.
A familiar tells me confidentially that in what businesses one can be
demonstrate the presence of scientology.
Weirdly -and I don't want to say anything with that- all such firms
went bankrupt in the past. There were some well-known names, for
example: Jorgos Travel, Premier Biztosító, Portocom.
